Cowgirl Capable

Heather and I go way back, as competitors in the sport of Mounted Shooting who became friends!! She is smart, caring, and encouraging no matter what your skill level and head space consists of. Safety, education, and a non intimidating atmosphere are at the top of her gun handling and shooting game. I am excited and downright HONORED to be a part of this amazing journey. To be able to provide a place to blossom remarkable and capable women and make new life long friendships along the way is exhilarating.

Lifelong friendships and empowerment

I met Tara Varrelman over a year ago on a trip called Ride to Rendezvous, and I knew then I met a lifelong friend. She was wise, kind, and tough! She told me about this cowgirl capable event, knowing it could help me regain my confidence in both riding and shooting. Heather was amazing and put so much thought and effort into this retreat. Heather, her team, the instructors and Tara all made this the weekend of a lifetime. And the women I met on this trip were all amazing and talented as well. Ive gained so much more than just an experience. Such comradery and inspiration. Thank you so much cowgirl capable and Tara! I look forward to the next one!

Amazing experience

I was able to attend a Cowgirl Capable Women’s Retreat this past September in Pateros, WA. The retreat was held at the beautiful Whistlin’ Pine Ranch at Alta Lake. The host, Tara, was so kind and accommodating. She is inspirational. Heather put on the event, and she is one amazing and capable woman! Her knowledge and expertise on safe gun handling and use, and her attention to detail was impressive. All of the women involved in the retreat were so kind, knowledgeable, and helpful. Everything was so well put together and thought out, even down to the smallest details. And a bonus that the food and atmosphere was amazing. I felt so empowered when I left there. Thank you, Cowgirl Capable!

Heather and Tara Badass Cowgirls

I met Heather and Tara through the competitive sport of mounted shooting. I attended my first professional clinic with Heather in 2010. She was so inspiring it got me into the sport. I even logistically assisted her and her comrades, Kim Lemke and Karen Klein, with clinics in the south sound. She was a mentor and key player in helping me start a club south of Seattle, South Sound Mounted Shooters.

Heather also provided advanced skills clinics for those a step above beginners. Whether she is teaching junior rodeo royalty young ladies how to gracefully present themselves and to speak to a room full with confidence or shoot from the back of a galloping horse, Heather’s passion and wiliness to help everyone are only two of her attributes. She is no-nonsense when it comes to gun safety and stays abreast on state and federal 2A bills and laws that could affect all firearm owners.

I met Tara through mounted shooting and envied her horsemanship. My gelding was having issues accepting the gunfire so he went to boot camp at Tara’s in eastern Washington. She put a hard 30 days on him and got him ready for me to compete on. Tara makes riding and shooting look so easy. She’s that smooth and confident. Tara would always make a point to come over and give me and Sailor a hug and words of encouragement when we were at competitions.

As a military veteran I asked Renay to help me host our clubs 911 Memorial Shoot as well. She pulled together flag's from every branch of the military including our POW's and we had members from every branch who rode grand entry presenting their colors. Renay also brought back a flag from her tour in Iraq that my Daughter Devin used to present colors during the National Anthem at that very special memorial shoot. Thank you Renay for your service and continued dedication to our veterans.

Mounted shooting clinic

I met Heather in 2010 at my first Cowboy Mounted Shooting clinic. I was Immediately impressed with her organization of curriculum and the obvious amount of work and thought involved to keep it safe and fun for horses and riders. The thought of shooting a gun off your horse for the first time can be quite intimidating but Heather and her crew (Kim & Karen) did everything they could to mitigate my nerves. They worked as a team clearly considering horses and riders as they introduced each step. Taking care to match the pace with each horse and rider’s abilities.

This was by far the most organized and smooth running clinic I’ve ever participated in. I was immediately hooked and compete in mounted shooting to this day thanks in large part to Heather’s clinic.

We did our best to anticipate the needs of both horse and rider so happy to hear we met your expectations.

Cowgirl Capable Retreat 2024

I was one of the instructors invited to Heather's first Cowgirl Capable retreats this year. She did an amazing job thinking everything through from renting out the range so it was just the female instructors and female students, the location (Whistlin Pine Ranch) which was absolutely breathtaking, and making sure everyone was taken care of for housing with AC and showers and providing amazing food. Getting to go horse back riding on the 500 acre ranch was so much fun. It was an amazing experience even as an instructor. Can't wait for the next one. Thank you Heather!

It was like we'd been instructing together for years. Happy to have your expertise added to the instructor team!

I first met Heather nearly 10 years ago at a new shooters clinic. I was immediately impressed by her confident leadership of a group of riders with varying levels of experience, including horses unfamiliar with gunfire. Heather’s calm demeanor and encouragement instill confidence in everyone she works with. She is not afraid to face challenges head-on and is willing to explore new approaches until she finds what works. Heather truly embodies the essence of an informed horsewoman. Her expertise in firearms, horsemanship, leadership, and the Western way of life makes her classes both enjoyable and worthwhile.

Thank you Hanna for such kind words because you were able to summarize what I hope for when working with anyone on any goal. From the arena to the boardroom.
